Left Handed Signers

Left handed people who have just begun to learn Sign Language often get a little bit confused about which hand they should be using as their dominant hand. The answer is that you should use which ever hand you feel most comfortable using, but you must remember to ALWAYS use the same hand as your dominant hand... by swapping hands you can cause much confusion with those trying to read you!

Reading Left Handed People
Left handed people at first can be a little difficult to read for the simple reason that all of the signs are back to front to anybody used to reading right handed people. This isn't too much of a problem and once you have spent a little time with a left handed signer you will soon find that you don't even notice the difference.

Fingerspelling
The hardest part of reading a left handed signer is when they are fingerspelling. If you would like to practice reading fingerspelling from a left handed signer then please use the 'Fingerspelling Machine' on the main resources page, and click on the 'L' once it is loaded.
