Tips for practising
Greetings are mostly your face.
Don’t worry if your handshapes aren’t perfect at first. A friendly face, eye contact and slow, calm signing will get you further than a textbook-tidy hello.
Go further with our course- Greetings are mostly carried by facial expression. A warm smile changes the meaning more than a perfect handshape.
- Make eye contact before you start signing – it’s how you say ‘I’m talking to you’.
- ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ share the same sign in BSL. Mouth the English word silently with your lips, that’s how the other person tells them apart.
- Practise the whole sequence (hello → how are you? → goodbye) before you try it on a real person.
